What is FlySpaceA?

FlySpaceA is a Space-A flight tracking service for the military community. Space-A ("Space Available") travel lets service members, retirees, veterans, and their families fly free on Department of Defense aircraft when seats go unused. The schedules have always been the hard part. They’re scattered across terminal pages, often stale, and hard to trust. FlySpaceA watches official Air Mobility Command terminal schedules around the clock and tells travelers the moment a seat shows up, on the web and on mobile, free.

More than 10 million Americans have earned this benefit. In a typical year, roughly 1% manage to use it. Closing that gap is why FlySpaceA exists.

How FlySpaceA Supports VTP

FlySpaceA gives VTP a working, at-scale example of its mission: people, policy, and technology brought together for a community that needs it. It reaches 10,119 registered travelers as of 10 September 2026, after about fifteen months of continuous operation, and a combined social following in the tens of thousands. In that time it has surfaced 12,313 flights across 345 destinations, tracked 263,750 seats, and delivered 43,137 flight alerts at 99.96% reliability. It also puts VTP’s security principles into practice rather than onto a slide. FlySpaceA publishes no CENTCOM flights. It stores no tail numbers or aircraft identifiers, and it keeps the minimum data required to deliver an alert. That is the standard VTP advocates for, running in production.

How VTP Supports FlySpaceA

The Von Terra Project supports FlySpaceA in three ways, none of them financial. It advises on cybersecurity, privacy, and policy, drawing on the expertise of its board and volunteer network. It promotes the service to the military community through its reach and relationships. And it places graduates of its cybersecurity programs as systems administrators on the platform, giving them production experience serving the community many of them come from. The Von Terra Project does not fund FlySpaceA and pays none of its costs. The goal is shared: get this tool in front of every eligible traveler, and ultimately into the hands of Air Mobility Command.
